High Density Closed-Cell Spray Foam Insulation

Closed-cell spray foam insulation is a type of insulation that is applied as a liquid and expands to form a dense, rigid foam. The foam is made up of individual cells that are closed, or not connected to each other, which gives the material its name. This type of insulation is more effective at keeping air and moisture out than open-cell foam insulation because it has a higher density.

The foam is typically made from two main components: a polyol resin and an isocyanate hardener. These two components are mixed together and heated to create a chemical reaction that causes the foam to expand and cure. Some of the foam's expansion can be controlled, which lets it be used on different surfaces and in different thicknesses.

Closed-cell Spray Foam Insulation Advantages

Closed-cell spray foam insulation is known for its high R-value, which measures its resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the more effective the insulation is at keeping heat inside the building during the winter and outside during the summer. Closed-cell spray foam insulation has an R-value of about R-6 per inch of thickness, which is much higher than traditional insulation materials like fiberglass or cellulose.

Another benefit of closed-cell spray foam insulation is its ability to fill gaps and cracks that other insulation materials may not be able to reach. It can be put on surfaces with odd shapes and around electrical outlets, pipes, and other holes. This makes the building more energy efficient overall.

The material is also a good air barrier and can effectively seal off the building envelope. This stops drafts and cuts down on the amount of noise that comes in from the outside. This can improve the overall comfort of the building and make it more energy-efficient.

Closed-cell spray foam insulation is also highly durable and can last for decades with proper maintenance. It is resistant to fire, pests, and rot, making it a great option for both residential and commercial buildings.

Additionally, it has a very low vapor permeance, which means it is highly resistant to moisture, mold, and mildew, making it a great option for areas with high humidity. It also has good structural strength and increases the stability of the building.

Overall, closed-cell spray foam insulation is a good way to insulate a building that will last and save energy. It can also make a building more comfortable. With its high R-value, air-sealing capabilities, and resistance to moisture and pests, it is a great option for both new construction and retrofit projects.

Which insulation should I use?

Most of the time, the choice between open-cell and closed-cell foam is based on application-specific performance factors, such as structural integrity, control of water vapor, and the amount of space available for installation.

In addition to considering the specifics of the situation, there are some general considerations to keep in mind when selecting open-cell or closed-cell foam. Most of the time, open-cell foam shouldn't be used below ground or in direct contact with water. Closed-cell foam isn't usually recommended for soundproofing applications because open-cell foam is better and cheaper.

As you plan your project, it's a good idea to consult with an SPF installation expert.  They will suggest the type of foam that will be most effective for your project.
